10 things you should know about Phu Quoc Island

This post on Phu Quoc Island is to share with you my thoughts and recommendations on Vietnam’s premium beach destination. It is also a summary of the few articles I wrote about Phu Quoc with links to the individual posts. Summarizing them into points, the 10 things you should know about Phu Quoc Island are:

01) Phu Quoc Island is the BEST beach destination in Vietnam.
Compare Phu Quoc beach to Vung Tau, Mui Ne, Nha Trang and Danang, it is the cleanest, quietest and the water clearest.

02) Phu Quoc Island is not the best overall Vietnam travel destination.
If you are looking for a combination of beaches, shopping, sight-seeing, variety of food and nightlife, chose Nha Trang or Mui Ne.

03) Phu Quoc Island Central makes for a good walkabout.
Even if you are going to Phu Quoc just for its beaches, do pay the central town of Duong Dong and theDuong Dong Bridge a visit. It is a very pleasant and eye candy place to stroll around. And the Duong Dong Market SHOULD NOT be missed too.

04) Phu Quoc Night Market has cheap seafood.
Phu Quoc Island, compare to other parts of Vietnam, is not the cheapest destination. But for an atmospheric and cheap dinning experience, go to the Phu Quoc Night Market. This restaurant, not from the night market, is also worth a visit for cheap food in Phu Quoc.

05) Phu Quoc Long Beach is the most popular.
Among all the beaches, Phu Quoc Long Beach is the most centrally located, most developed and also where most hotels and resorts congregate.

06) Phu Quoc An Thoi is a good riding destination.
You can’t ride in Vietnam even with your international license. But if you have a Vietnamese license, or do want to ride anyway, Phu Quoc An Thoi will make a nice riding experience.

07) Phu Quoc Cau Castle is not a castle.
Cau Castle, or Dinh Cau in Vietnamese, is not a castle at all. It is a combination of a temple with a lighthouse. But it gives you sweeping view of Phu Quoc’s harbor entrance and those beautiful sunsets. The Phu Quoc Lighthouse 20m further down is a great spot too.

08) Phu Quoc Central Island has no 5-stars hotels (yet).
There are only a few mini hotels in the town central.

09) Phu Quoc Island can be reached from the Mekong Delta.
Besides flying from Saigon, Phu Quoc Island can also be reached from Rach Gia of the Mekong Delta. ThePhu Quoc Ferry is only a 2.5hrs ride.

10) Phu Quoc Island resort typically looks like this…
A bungalow to yourself with the beach 10 meters away, this is how a typical Phu Quoc Resort looks like.
